The Ppinger originated by accident on a sunny summer’s day in 2019.

It began with a simple wish; to make our non-drinking lunch guests feel really at home with something special created just for them.

I’ve always loved experimenting with ingredients, using spices and herbs to bring a dish to life. Whilst shopping for raw ingredients for an al fresco lunch, I shunned the usual canned suspects and decided instead to concoct my own original take on a fresh soft drink – a sort of ‘mocktail’ - to serve alongside. I adore the fiery heat and palate cleansing refreshment of ginger so this had to be the base. I then added apple juice, elderflower, a little water and a generous squeeze of lime to taste. From that low-key lunch party, our first Ppinger recipe was brought to life.

Fresh, fiery and full of bold exciting flavours, our homemade ‘aperitif’ was an immediate hit! Blown away by the natural zing and tingle, everyone who tried it wanted the recipe before they left. Each time we entertained we continued to make up fresh batches and every time the reaction was the same – more please!!!

Such was its popularity we started making Ppinger for free for family and friends who had begged for more. That Christmas, we took the plunge and bought a hundred empty bottles so we could produce enough to really test the tingle out. The response was overwhelming… and we haven’t looked back since.

Cheers!

About Daniel

I came to England from Ghana, to continue my studies after completing my A Levels. Growing up in West Africa I spent quite a bit of time with my paternal grandmother, who was very interested in the use of herbs for medicinal purposes. She had so much success in the application of natural herbs to deliver clear health benefits that one of her sons (my uncle) replicated some of her recipes and founded a whole business (in the alternative medicine space) based on this principle.

My grandmother was an avid fan of ginger, herbs and spices and the advantages of these ingredients was a regular topic of conversation within our household.

Combine my grandmother’s fascination with nature’s remedies  with the fact that my mum was a full time baker who helped develop my taste buds and hone a sense of what tastes 'right' and it’s easy to see how Kyon Drinks evolved.  The business blends my own belief in the healing properties of key herbs and spices, with the desire to create a wonderful, healthy drink with an  a-m-a-z-i-n-g taste sensation.

The Kyon Ethos

At Kyon Drinks we make plant based, naturally healthy and lightly sparkling non-alcoholic alternatives to alcoholic beverages. By creating vibrant and aromatic new plant-based recipes, our aim is to give you (and your taste buds) all the pleasure of drinking… minus the alcohol. Intense, sublime, divinely refreshing, all Kyon soft drinks revive while also leaving an enticingly lingering ‘kick’ on the palate. Containing only naturally occurring sugars, they also satisfy a sweet tooth – but without any of the guilt.

Did you know?

Kion is Spanish slang for ginger – ‘Kyon’ is our play on this, as all our drinks are based on spicy ginger.

The Kyon Criteria

We believe in:

  • Using only the finest, responsibly and ethically sourced ingredients;

  • Helping to safeguard the planet by a striking balance between environmentally friendly practices and cost;

The Greatness of Ginger

We think everyone should be aware of what they consume. At Kyon Drinks our focus is on the finest natural ingredients with sustainability and flavour. Extracted from the fresh rhizome (root) we source our main ingredient, organic ginger, from Peru and Costa Rica. Packed with antioxidants and with myriad health benefits, this superfood also has a fascinating history.

Considered a luxury for over 5,000 years, ginger is now widely available. Originating in southern parts of China, its popularity quickly spread through the rest of Asia, India and the ‘Spice Islands’ to West Africa. Ginger was brought to Europe in the 1st century by the Romans but following the fall of the Roman Empire, it slipped into relative obscurity until Marco Polo brought it back from his Eastern travels. With the discovery of the New World in the 15th century, ginger was taken to the Caribbean where it continues to flourish. Today, India is the largest producer of ginger in the world.

In the Middle Ages, the price for ½ kg of ginger was the same as one sheep!

Why Drink Ginger?

As well as the addictively bold, heart-warming flavour that forms the base of all our drinks, ginger has long been acknowledged for its numerous health benefits. Loaded with antioxidants – essential natural compounds that help prevent and reduce stress on the body’s DNA – ginger is also a natural immune booster and potent anti-inflammatory.

  • Naturally protective and with one of the highest levels of antioxidants compared to other foods, ginger helps prevent oxidative stress by stabilising cell-damaging free radicals. This means it may help protect against cancer and strokes.

  • With anti-nausea properties, it is well known for helping to settle upset stomachs plus travel and morning sickness

  • As it's an anti-inflammatory, ginger makes a natural period pain reliever.

  • Its spicy warmth can stimulate metabolism and boost detoxification. A natural appetite suppressant, it could even aid weight loss.

  • By helping to regulate blood sugar levels it could help against diabetes too.

  • It stimulates blood flow and is even a hero herb for hangovers!
